Design Challenge

The Brief

A fundamental basis of good product design is an extensive understanding of user needs, and how to address those needs within design. Traditionally, user research is conducted with the assumption that the user knows exactly what they need, but oftentimes that assumption is false and thus designing under that assumption can lead to a negative influence on the user. For example, streaming services are designed to be consistently engaging and instantly gratifying, but, as a result, users will increase their screen time, which is directly linked by research to diminished physical and mental well-being.

This is why user wellness is important. A focus on user wellness means that the designer incorporates design solutions that empower the user, while still aligning with business goals. Good design that incorporates user wellness can take many forms, from extensions to full apps. This article explains how user wellness can be analyzed through the lens of the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, which can direct designers towards a more innovative way to incorporate user wellness.
